Punjab Sugar Policy: 5kg Limit Per ID Card for Ramadan

Punjab Sugar Policy: 5kg Limit Per ID Card for Ramadan

The Punjab Sugar Policy has introduced a strict 5kg per ID card limit on subsidized sugar for Ramadan. The Punjab government aims to provide relief through Ramadan bazaars, selling sugar at Rs130 per kilogram. However, many residents believe this restriction is inadequate for larger families.

Government’s Initiative Under Policy

To control sugar distribution, the Punjab Policy requires ID card verification at Ramadan relief bazaars across the province. The government has launched 80 Ramadan bazaars, including 10 in Lahore, ensuring availability at subsidized rates.

Public Concerns Over Punjab Sugar Policy

Many citizens argue that the Policy does not consider the needs of larger households. The 5kg limit is seen as insufficient, especially during Ramadan when consumption increases. Critics claim that restricting purchases through ID cards creates unnecessary hurdles for families.

Price Hike & Market Challenges

Arif Gujjar, President of the Kiryana Merchant Association, criticized the rising sugar prices, stating that sugar costs Rs170 per kilogram in the open market. He warned that cartel-like practices among sugar mills and dealers might push prices even higher, making it difficult for low-income families to afford.

Government’s Defense of Punjab Policy

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari defended the Policy, highlighting that the initiative ensures affordable sugar for all citizens. She emphasized that Ramadan bazaars provide sugar at a significantly lower price compared to the open market, making it accessible to those in need.

Alternative Sugar Options Beyond Policy

For residents needing more sugar, model bazaars offer an alternative. While the price is slightly higher at Rs140 per kilogram, there are no quantity restrictions, allowing households to purchase according to their needs.

The Punjab Policy is a step toward stabilizing sugar prices and ensuring affordability during Ramadan. While the initiative provides relief, concerns about limited quantity and rising market prices persist. Authorities must address these challenges to balance affordability and accessibility for all citizens.

This policy might help control hoarding, but 5kg may not be enough for big families. Hope it’s implemented fairly.
