In a clear message, China stated that the U.S. must abandon its strategy of extreme pressure, threats, and blackmail. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian urged Washington to engage in dialogue that is rooted in mutual benefit, equality, and respect. He further emphasized that China doesn’t seek conflict but is also not afraid of it.
China Warns Trump: Tariff War Escalates Further
The conflict has intensified with Trump’s imposition of tariffs reaching up to 245% on Chinese imports. Initially, the U.S. imposed a 20% tariff, blaming China for its alleged role in fentanyl distribution. Additional tariffs were later added in response to China’s trade practices, pushing the total to historic levels. Meanwhile, China retaliated with tariffs up to 125% on American products.
China Denounces Tariff Weaponization
China’s Commerce Ministry strongly criticized the U.S. for weaponizing trade tariffs. It pointed out that the U.S. has taken its tariff policies to an irrational level, treating economic tools as political weapons. The ministry added that the U.S. has turned tariffs into a meaningless numbers game, which China refuses to acknowledge.
Beijing’s Economic Resilience
Despite rising tensions, China reported a 5.4% economic growth in Q1, outperforming forecasts. Many exporters rushed shipments in anticipation of new tariffs. This growth sends a message that China remains economically resilient, even amid external pressure.
