Donald Trump shared the update on Truth Social, saying, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.” He praised both nations for choosing diplomacy over destruction.

Minutes later, Ishaq Dar confirmed Pakistan’s agreement. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace, while stressing that the country stands firm on defending its sovereignty. From New Delhi, Jaishankar also confirmed the ceasefire. He highlighted India’s firm stance on terrorism and the need to prevent escalation.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri added that the decision to suspend all military operations — on land, sea, and air — reflects a shared interest in avoiding further conflict. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio credited the ceasefire to consistent diplomatic communication. He revealed that he and US Vice President JD Vance held back-to-back meetings with Pakistani and Indian leaders, including PMs Shehbaz Sharif and Narendra Modi.

Tensions That Led to the Agreement

Violence surged after the April 22 Pahalgam attack in IIOJK, killing 26. India blamed Pakistan-based groups without offering proof. In response, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and revoked visas. Pakistan reacted by sealing its side of the Wagah border and calling the water blockade an “act of war.”

The situation worsened by May 6–7 when several Pakistani cities, including Bahawalpur and Muzaffarabad, came under Indian airstrikes. Pakistan retaliated with Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos. During the campaign, five Indian jets — including four Rafales — were reportedly downed.Pakistan also intercepted 77 Israeli-made Harop drones with advanced countermeasures. The military described these drone attacks as targeted efforts against civilians and mosques. In response, Pakistan launched the Al-Fatah missile, dedicating it to children lost in the violence.

Despite no National Command Authority meeting, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif assured that national defence remains active. On the Indian side, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh expressed openness to de-escalation, if Pakistan shows equal commitment.

The United States and G7 nations continue urging both countries to stay engaged in peace dialogue.
