Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami Regains Political Status

Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami regains political status after court ruling, marking a dramatic political shift in the country. The Supreme Court overturned a 2013 ban that had blocked the religious party from elections. On Sunday, a four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed delivered the verdict.

The court ordered the Election Commission to restore Jamaat’s political registration. It also directed them to resolve all related issues, such as election symbol allocation. This landmark judgment allows Jamaat to return to the electoral field after more than a decade.

The original ban came under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration. In August 2023, she also placed an executive ban on Jamaat. A year later, in August 2024, mass protests forced her out of power. She fled to India, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus became interim leader.

Yunus revoked the executive ban earlier this year. That move set the legal stage for the Supreme Court’s new ruling. Now, Jamaat can take part in the 13th parliamentary elections expected later in 2025.

Jamaat-e-Islami Regains Political Status as Verdict Reverses 2013 Ban

The party’s lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Manir, called the verdict historic. He said the 2013 decision was politically motivated. This new judgment reflects fairness and judicial independence, he added.

The verdict followed another major legal reversal. On May 27, the Supreme Court overturned the war crimes conviction of senior Jamaat leader A.T.M. Azharul Islam. Authorities released him on May 28 after over ten years in prison.

Jamaat’s involvement in the 1971 war remains controversial. At that time, the party supported Pakistan. The Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina and her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, strongly opposed Jamaat’s stance.

Jamaat-e-Islami to Contest Elections Again

Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami regains political status after court ruling, paving the way for its return to parliament. The upcoming election will mark Jamaat’s first official participation in over ten years.

Meanwhile, the interim government has taken action against the Awami League. In May 2025, it banned the party and placed several leaders under trial. This action came after the violent suppression of anti-quota protests last year.

Political observers say this ruling may reshape Bangladesh’s democracy. It reintroduces a major religious party and removes the dominance of one party rule. With a fairer system in place, many expect a more competitive election this year.
