Imran Khan’s Statement from Jail: A Victory for Truth and Constitution

Most recently, in Pakistan, the country’s former prime minister Imran Khan, who is serving a sentence, thanked God after a ruling by the Supreme Court went in his favour after a crucial case. In a short handwritten statement from jail, Khan just wrote: ‘Allah is the truth, the God of truth.’
It was handed down during continuing political turmoil, and as Khan faced new charges of an increasingly politicised judiciary. Khan’s supporters have read the verdict as vindicating a wider struggle to establish the rule of law and justice, tied to the defeat of the last civilian government in 2007.
The verdict is a significant point in the legal cases against Khan, and a reminder of the PTI’s unequivocal approach to political accountability in Pakistan.
Background:
Imran Khan and PTI are relentless about transparency and accountability throughout Pakistan’s political economy, as well as in its Foreign Office. His incarceration is a signal issue of his supporters, who’ve swarmed the courts and the streets, accusing the more established political parties and the judiciary of conspiring to keep him under restriction.
And the decision of the Supreme Court this year was a major morale-booster to PTI and its supporters in ongoing efforts to bring good governance and justice in the country.
Conclusion:
Imran Khan responds to adversity with fortitude and resolve – and maintains his commitment to fundamental principles of truth and justice. In the eventual Supreme Court ruling that upheld democracy in his country, we can see the hand of the law enforcing fundamental principles of constitutional rights.
