Kashmiri Students Attacked, Across India After Pahalgam Incident

Kashmiri students attacked across various Indian states face growing threats and harassment after the deadly assault in Pahalgam, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which killed 26 people, mostly domestic tourists.
Rising Threats After Pahalgam Tragedy
Immediately following the attack, incidents of discrimination against Kashmiri students surfaced in multiple states. According to the IIOJK Students Association, landlords and hostel authorities in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh allegedly forced students to leave their accommodations.

Nasir Khuehami, the association’s convenor, reported several alarming cases. At a university in Himachal Pradesh, attackers allegedly assaulted and abused Kashmiri students, calling them “terrorists” in front of peers.
Panic Spreads Among Students in Dehradun
In Dehradun, about 20 Kashmiri Muslim students fled to the airport fearing for their lives. Reports claim that Hindu Raksha Dal, a radical right-wing group, issued direct threats. They told the students to exit the city or face “serious consequences.”
Such actions led to panic and fear among the affected youth. Consequently, the incident sparked outrage among rights groups and politicians.
Political Leaders Demand Safety for Kashmiri Students
Former IIOJK Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti publicly appealed to state and national authorities. They urged the Union Home Minister to ensure the safety and dignity of Kashmiri students attacked in different regions.
Khuehami stressed, “This isn’t just about physical safety. It’s a systematic campaign to isolate students based on identity and origin.”
Meanwhile, tensions between India and Pakistan also intensified. New Delhi suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and downgraded diplomatic ties following the conflict.
The recent events show how quickly violence spreads beyond conflict zones. After the Pahalgam attack, Kashmiri students attacked in many Indian states now live in fear. Threats, abuse, and forced evictions have shaken their sense of safety. Leaders have called for action, yet many students still face daily risks. Everyone deserves safety, especially in educational spaces. We must raise awareness and demand immediate protection for students. Their identity should never make them targets. Moving forward, we must stand against such hate and work towards peace and unity.
