Despite these benefits, NADRA ends CNIC processing after only three years. The service didn’t attract enough users, and most people remained unaware of its availability.

NADRA Ends CNIC Processing: Immediate Closure of Counters

NADRA ordered all staff to shut down the CNIC counters at post offices. It directed them to return equipment and deposit the collected fees. Staff must deliver all ready CNICs to applicants before they dismantle the counters.

A NADRA spokesperson confirmed the decision. He said, “We observed an extremely low number of applicants at post office counters. So, we closed them. We will transfer the equipment to union councils in the next fiscal year.”

Lack of Public Awareness Caused the Failure

Although the service provided essential updates like address or marital status changes, most people didn’t use it. NADRA ends CNIC processing because citizens didn’t know these services existed at GPOs. Officials blamed the poor turnout on the failure to run proper awareness campaigns.

Authorities had planned to use social media for promotion. However, they didn’t launch these campaigns at the right time or on a wide scale.

NADRA Moves Services to Union Councils

The closure affected 83 counters across Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Azad Kashmir. In Karachi alone, 10 post offices—including II Chundrigar Road and Saddar GPO—stopped offering CNIC services.

Even though the counters reduced crowding at NADRA centres, most citizens never visited them. Now, it will move the equipment to union councils. Officials believe this shift will improve access and decentralize service delivery.
