Nawaz Sharif Elected Unopposed as President of PML(N)

A Historic Moment for PML-N:

After six years, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has once again been Elected unopposed as President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). History rewrites itself.

The Uncontested Victory

Nawaz Sharif was elected unopposed because nobody else had submitted nomination papers for the party presidency: the ruling party’s intra-party elections were later held. Photo courtesy Devinder SharmaThe party had set a date for intra-party elections earlier in the year and the scrutiny of nomination papers had brought it down to the only candidate left in the party – a three-time serving premier, Nawaz Sharif. So it was only logical that he would be elected unopposed as party chief.

Shehbaz Sharif’s Resignation

The coronation of Nawaz Sharif as the president of the PML-N was orchestrated by the guilty resignation of Shehbaz Sharif, the president of the PML-N until his forced abdication as the prime minister in April 2022. The CWC graciously accepted the good prime minister’s resignation ‘with a heavy heart’, but effectuating the exodus of the all-powerful Shehbaz to pave the way to the Ministry of Defence for his brother, the latter was appointed the acting president until the elections are held. Since Shehbaz stepped into the office as the president of Pakistan in March 2018, following the disqualification by the Supreme Court in July 2017 of the elder brother as the prime minister on account of corruption.

A Symbolic Date

Significantly, the election came on the anniversary of nuclear test-firings by Pakistan in 1998, during the second term of the PML-N government – when Nawaz Sharif served as Prime Minister. This meant that the real date of Nawaz Sharif’s return, as leader of the PML-N, promised a uniquely close transfer of periods in Pakistan’s history.

The Official Announcement

At the meeting of the general council he will be formally inducted as president. After his nomination is seconded, party members will raise their hands to indicate support for his candidacy.

Looking Ahead

For Nawaz Sharif, this is his third term, but many PML-N supporters and observers of Pakistani political dynamics are keenly watching his role in reshaping the party. His experience, political acumen and political legacy are crucial to the future of PML-N and Pakistani politics.
