The Rise and Fall of Pakistan Junior League: A Bold but Costly Dream

On one fine day; the 13th of March, 2022 to be precise, which was a Sunday afternoon, Ramiz Raja who is the Chairman of PCB was lazing on the chair in PCB headquarters and suddenly came up with the Pakistan Junior League idea. He had no time wasted before planning on how to turn this vision into reality.
Profits and Losses
The Pakistan Junior League which was under expectation to alter the future of cricket in the country. Literally, the first edition of the phone created a good revenue of 95 million rupees. But there was a hitch: the league was profitable, and so was PCB — only, the latter invested a whopping 929 million rupees to make the former happen.
A Dream Too Expensive?
The executive committee headed by Ramiz Raja spent most of the PCB money to launch the league; whereas, the league was also somewhat capable of making money, but expenditure was much higher than income. This trend of having large projects is not new with the PCB chairmen where they have the intention of making massive changes within a short duration, only to find that they are costly to the board.
The Broadcast Struggles
In the past, which PCB never understood, it was nearly impossible for the organization to sell a two-year broadcast deal. Finally after so much rigging they were able to get one that will earn them approximately 6 dollars. 5 million from the August 2024 to December 2026. However, a substantial part of this income will be spent on the five mentors that were hired for a new Champions One Day Cup tournament.
Do You Benefit From the New Tournament?
PCB has introduced this Champions Cup in already busy domestic cricket fixture. The question remains: but will it really improve Pakistan’s cricket? The more important element is – how this will translate into the improvement of Pakistan’s performance in international cricket tournaments?
Missing International Exposure
At the moment, most international players in Pakistan cannot go through desirable exposure to the best talents in the world. And although the new Champions Cup will provide experience to young players, it does not introduce the type of competitive play that would help Pakistan in global cricketing system. Thus, rather than spending on hosts which many saw as expensive, PCB could have heeded the call to bring better players from the international teams.
Marketing and Hype
Getting their point across just as mobile companies convey the camera getaways and storage in new model PCB has used pompous terms such as the live streaming and artificial intelligence for the Champions One Day Cup. But as we have seen that the PSL sells itself but does not win the T20 world cup trophy for Pakistan, the same can be said about this new tournament.
