Shahbaz Sharif Vows to Crush Terrorism in Balochistan

In his address to minister Shahbaz Sharif focused on the trou out that the province had terrorist activities. He said: ‘Mourning can once again be heard from across Balochistan as three more incidents have led to a surge in infrastructure.’ Sharif said the government is fully committed to ‘rooting out terrorism and restoring the peace’ of Balochistan. He also said that the military has received all the tools it needs to tackle the issue

Sharif also noted that terrorists had tried to sow seeds of discord between Pakistan and China, especially regarding projects in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), adding that the government would only talk to groups that abide by the constitution of Pakistan, but not to ‘friend-like enemies’.

His speech follows a series of attacks across Balochistan, including the bombing of the Dozan railway bridge and several attacks on civilians and security forces, which have further isolated the province and disrupted facilities. Following this, the military has ramped up its operations, killing several militants and foiling several major terrorist attacks.

Going forward, analysts expect that the government’s hard line stance and increased military backing could dramatically cut terrorist activity in Balochistan. But even they stress that the social and economic problems that give rise to unrest need to be tackled. The fact that the Gwadar University has been built in a record time of 18 months, and that work is underway on a desalination plant, is seen as a positive sign for long-term stability.

Overall, Address of the PM of Pakistan emphasises that the government will fight the menace of terrorism while also working on the development and uplifting of Balochistan. The future of Balochistan would be decided by these steps and the local population.
