Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal’s Intimate Wedding: A Bollywood Love Story

Since the beginning of 2024, the Indian actor Sonakshi Sinha has drawn significant acclaim for her role of Fareedan in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. But this weekend, the actor was making headlines for another kind of milestone. In an impromptu reveal for her fans, Sinha shared an image on Instagram from her own wedding, in which she revealed that she has tied the knot to her fellow actor Zaheer Iqbal.

And with it was her Instagram caption – a series of candid photos of the two of them, Smile-y Sonakshi beaming beside a dapper Zaheer, both resplendent in co-ordinated ivory outfits for the big day. The post ended with: ‘To love, to hope, to all things beautiful together, here and forever.’

Widespread congratulations:
Their announcement was greeted with wide congratulations. Zaheer copied Sonakshi’s post to his Instagram, thereby announcing publicly their relationship. According to the Indian Express, the couple were married in a private civil ceremony at Sonakshi’s house, attended by close family and friends. The discreetly picked guest list included her co-star in Heeramandi, the actress Aditi Rao Hydari, the actors Siddarth, Aayush Sharma, Huma Qureshi and also the rap artist Yo Yo Honey Singh.

Bollywood stars posted about the couple’s long-delayed marriage. Parineeti Chopra posted a pic of Sonakshi and Zaheer on her IG story and added pink hearts with the caption: ‘Congratulations you two! Welcome to the club. Wishing you all the happiness!’ Another post by Alia Bhatt, sharing the same pic, welcomed them to the ‘club’ of married people: ‘Congratulations Sona and Zaheer! You both look so happy and in love. Big hug to you both. Welcome to the club!

Following their civil service, the newlyweds hosted a bash at the restaurant Bastian – a celebrity haunt – in Mumbai with the who’s who of Bollywood in attendance. The groom Saif Khan looked snazzy in a sharp all-black outfit while under tight security. Other guests included Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the director of Sonakshi’s upcoming Heeramandi, actors Aditya Roy Kapur and Meezaan Jafri.

Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal, who worked together in the 2022 film Double XL, were a rare couple who didn’t flaunt their romance on social media and maintained a skillful, sane distance from the prying eyes of public opinion, content with the occasional mushy Instagram story. Earlier this year, when rumours about their wedding were rife, Sonakshi shared a blunt retort on The Economic Times: ‘First of all, at what length do people need to explain whether they’re getting married? We don’t lie and say we’re not. And who are these people to ask if we are or not? It’s nobody’s business… Secondly, it’s my choice, so I don’t understand why people are so bothered about it.

When I asked her about it a year after their marriage, in reference to all the continued curiosity, she told me with a smile: ‘People ask me if I’m married more than my parents. It’s so funny!’ Despite a concerted attempt to keep their private lives private, pictures of their wedding invitation – a holiday photo in portrait style, like a magazine cover – did make it online. Before their wedding, viral photographs of their mehndi ceremony showed Sonakshi wearing a beautiful maroon outfit and Zaheer in a smart kurta-pyjama.

After enjoying the scene, the couple chose to share it with the world themselves, in a post on Instagram, about their ‘Love that lasts’.
