Today marks the ninth anniversary of the martyrdom of Marium Mukhtiar, Pakistan’s first female fighter pilot

Today commemorates the ninth anniversary of the brave death of Pakistan’s first female fighter pilot, Marium Mukhtiar.


Marium Mukhtiar was a gifted football player who played for Balochistan United in the National Women’s Football Championship. She was born in Karachi on May 18, 1992, and attended Army Public School.

Marium Mukhtiar joined the Pakistan Air Force in 2011 as a member of the 132nd GD Pilot course because of her tenacity and desire to serve her country. One of the rare women to reach this milestone was her graduation in 2014.Marium Mukhtiar aircraft experienced a technical issue close to Mianwali on November 24, 2015, while on a training mission. In an act of unselfish bravery, she and her co-pilot tried to guide the aircraft away from populous areas rather than immediately ejecting. Unfortunately, Marium was defeated.

On March 23, 2016, she received the Tamgha-e-Basalat, an award given for bravery, in recognition of her sacrifice. For many Pakistanis, particularly young women, Marium Mukhtiar’s tale continues to inspire them to follow their aspirations without fear. As a reminder of commitment, patriotism, and the ultimate sacrifice made for the country, her legacy endures.
